SACRAMENTO (AP) - A new U.S. Census report on California's fastest-growing cities and towns draws a portrait of a vast inland migration as residents relentlessly search for a cheaper place to call home.

Whether to suburban Sacramento's Lincoln in the north or the Inland Empire's Beaumont and Murrieta in the south, thousands, statistics show, have taken eastbound highways to the hills and valleys of Central California.

This Dude grew up in Lincoln. It started out as a tiny little town of 6,000 souls. Everyone knew each other and we always gave the raised-hand-from-the steeringwheel salute as friends drove past. The volunteer fire department hosted a hunters' pancake breakfast on the first day of pheasant season. Now our A&W has become a McDonalds and a huge retirement villa is overtaking the town and its poltics. This Dude left town about 8 years ago and can hardly recognize it when he goes back.

It's impossible for a young working class couple to buy a good sized house in the urban coastal areas of California. You want a house over 2,000 square feet, and your are going to be paying over $350,000, no matter how much of a fixer upper it is.

It is ridiculous what housing prices are in L.A. I am getting out thank goodness. I could buy the 1,650 square foot house I am renting, but I am not willing to pony up $380,000 for it, which is the going price in my neighborhood. Down South, I could live in a huge house, with land for this price, and I don't even like it out here that much as it is. The California dream is over.

I wrote a whole chapter on this mechanism in my book. It's the same thing that's been going on in this State since the early 50s when zoning law became all the rage. My dad started out as a city planner for Richmond, CA, and went on to become a municipal financing consultant so he got to see the plans before the infrastructure was even contemplated.

It's a system designed to enrich large developers and land speculators who have ALWAYS been big donors to the Democratic Party. It operates off the power of government to manipulate land value. I modeled how it works in the book.

This is particularly true for Latino families. They want a home. They want a little bit of space."

When we sold our house in the Inland Empire, most of the people who toured it were two or more families looking to buy it together. They seemed stunned that my husband and I lived there by ourselves.

Many 2000+ square foot homes around my parents' house southwest of LA go for $600,000. My husband and I tried the Inland Empire, but even in a nicer area there I was carjacked in my own driveway and burglarized twice, all in one year. The hospitals were horribly crowded with illegals and I almost died of appendicities because the ER was filled with people who were using it as their primary doctor. The quality of life there was so low. That's why we moved to Indiana last month. We are getting a brand-new tricked-out 3500 square foot house on a pond, and with a walk-out basement, in pretty much the snobbiest area, for $50,000 less than we sold our house for in the Inland Empire. And the weather is nicer here, because no matter how much it rains and snows here, at least it's not 102 for five months out of the year.

I am finding a 2000 square foot home for my brother and sister in-law. You can still get them here for around $210,000, THOUGH PRICES ARE CLIMBING.
