Totally off-topic, but did you know that only about 1,000 people contribute to keep Free Republic up and running? That is out of over 100,000 registered users on this site.

Exactly what I've been saying. Liberia is a typical fuzzy-minded liberal cause, but if Bush gets involved with it, even by sending "advisors," he will NOT get any thanks from the liberals. They will merely use it as more evidence that he has imperial ambitions.

The article puts the basic objection more clearly than what I've said before (that we have no national security interest in Liberia) in this key paragraph:

I know of no such thing as a human-rights imperative for the U.S. government. I know that the U.S. Constitution empowers the federal government to provide for the common defense, and that it grants Congress the power to declare war, and responsibilities as commander-in-chief to the president. Private organizations, religious institutions, and even well-meaning individuals may feel compelled to aid others in need, and they should be free to do so. But the U.S. federal government has no such responsibility.
