As it stands today, I'd back Tom McClintock 100% if he ran.
Else I'd back Issa, Bill Jones(if he runs), Arnold, Simon, the democrat, and Riordan in that order.

I voted in the poll - I am surprised to see Tom doing so well - but I wonder if Tom still has name recognition. I heard he only lost his last election by 1%. For a statewide election - that should mean that most people recognize him.

Well as we all know it takes a enormous amount of money to run and win in CA. It's all about television and radio exposure. So if you like what you see please go to his website

Darryl Issa has clearly "earned the right" to run for Governor. He financed this recall. I would prefer McClintock but Issa is a true hero. Its a tough call. If given the choice, though, I'd probably pull the lever for McClintock. He's more likely to succeed in bringing the state back to aome semblance of mormalcy.
To: kellynla
Issa may have earned it but I'll vote McClintock over any of the others.
I just disagree with Issa on too many of the issues.

Bump! I voted "YES"!

If he wants to, he'd better get it together right quick.
There will be at most three months of campaigning before the election. That's not enough time to raise the funds necessary for a statewide campaign, and I can promise that every second of television and radio advertising time will be bought immediately.
Tom doesn't have that money, either in his campaign account or in personal wealth.
Add to that the problem the while Tom has lots of grassroot support (I personally think he is the ideal solution to the California problem), it is rather disorganizaed.
That needs to be got together immediately, because he'll need them to hit the ground running, and move fast and in coordination if he wants to stand a chance.
Finally, Tom's senate seat is up in 2004, and is quite vulnerable- it's one of the races targeted for state party attention in order to prevent it from being lost to the Democrats. A statewide run would deplete Tom's already meager warchest.
So, should Tom McClintock run? IF he can get some good people onboard right now, and whip his base into shape, and IF he can get money from heaven somehow (because there's not really time to raise the money- you need it before the election is announced to buy the television time), and IF he can protect his seat somehow, either by returning bolstered by a statewide campaign or by having a very strong replacement, then yes.
However, I think it's too late for him to do any of these things effectively, and that he ought put off any statewide ambitions until 2006 and focus on keeping his senate seat for the GOP.

Good order except for the Bill Jones thing.
I'm still mad at him for two reasons: one, while in the state assembly, he screwed us, sold us out, and pushed through a massive tax increase in the budget and two, he endorsed Bush in 2000, then flipped to McCain.
I don't have much love for Bush (he's turning out as liberal as his dad), but I loathe McCain, and Jones didn't just go with McCain, but jumped ship when it looked like McCain was an actual contender.
Plus, there's the fact that Bill Jones has proven that he can't raise a dime in money.
Bill Jones should be just ahead of Simon, who is a total tool.

"Where's Rairdon?" LOL troublemaker...LOL
I thought you might be stoked about the poll.
Haven't checked it today but McClintok has a sizable lead before I crashed last night. Of course the sample was only a couple of thousand votes. Where's Ernest? I wanted him to ping the CA list so they could FReep the poll.

I'm going into lurk mode for a bit. I am so tired of all the "expert" opinion and assassination of character already running rampant across the threads against conservatives and in support of RINOs.

Well stay positive my friend. Most of the negative is from out-of-staters who really don't have a dog in this fight anyway so I just ignore them. Important thing is we got the signatures needed for the recall. Now we have to come up with a good solid conservative candidate to run. Time is short and if our man Mac is going to throw his hat in the ring he better raise some serious bank quickly.

Don't feel lonely! I'm right there with you!
I still like Simon who was a guest of leading Sacramento talk host yesterday. He's sharper now than he was!!!
I really like Mac because I think his fiscal message is one that will resonate with the main reason for the recall. Simon is focusing on reviving pride in CA and that's good and POSITIVE! (yet general enough not to be boring like fiscal matters, alone)
To me, Arnold is worse than the one Simon beat out in the last primary election. I just can't abide RINO's or celebrities. Reagan had moved well beyond being just a shallow celebrity when he announced for Governor!

Here are the latest numbers on the poll:
Who has 'earned the right' to run for the Republican Party in the Gubernatorial Recall Special Election?
State Senator Tom McClintock 73%
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger 6%
US Congressman Darrell Issa 6%
Former Candidate Bill Simon 13%
Total Votes - 2928
Right now I would take Tom, Bill, Darrell or Arnold over the POS we have in Sacramento now. I saw what happened in the national elections of 92 and 96 when conservatives who are purer than the snow in the high Sierra's on New Year's day sat out and didn't vote against Clinton. That happened last November when the pure of heart in their minds didn't vote against Davis for Bill Simon.
