This PBS documentary mentioned that Luther accepted only two of the sacraments, Baptism and Eucharist, and indicated that the other five were "inventions" of the Church. That surprises me because there is plenty of scriptural support for the five sacraments Luther threw out. This documentary gave the impression that ALL of Catholicism was corrupt and that if you were not corrupt, you became a Protestant. It missed the fact the the vast majority of Catholics and priests and nuns were good and trying their best to practice their faith and love of Jesus. The popes (especially Pius X) and many priests, monks, and nuns were indeed corrupt but they comprised a small minority of the whole Catholic population, which, by the way, remained good Catholics, during and after the Reformation. It was during this same era that the great St. Teresa of Avila reformed the then corrupt Carmelite order in Spain. Many Catholics today feel that Marty Luther was an instrument of the Holy Spirit to give the leadership of the Catholic Church a good swift kick in the rear end, which is what it needed. The Church did a pretty good job of cleaning up its act during the Counter-Reformation.
