Get a Springfield Armory M1 Garand. They are still making them, or you could enroll in the Civilian Marksmanship Program and order a surplus M1 Garand from WW2 (up to 5 annually actually)

Still remember my sore, bleeding thumb the first time I encountered one of these monsters. Hated it at first but learned to love the weapon.

Great minds travel the same channels and all that.

The CMP has a good newsletter too. That .30-'06 has a bit more recoil than the .303 or .308, but it sure is a sweet rifle!

It is my favorite. Straightest shooting visually sighted rifle anywhere. Of course, I have others...
