There is another possibility here. Doug may be conveniently getting rid of his fabricated source, now that it's been challenged. He knows nobody else can track down this fictitious person, so he makes that very fact the basis of his attempt at damage control.

Odd how a blogger, William McKinley,seems to have been the impetus for Doug's retraction, who really shouldn't be better at reporting than a...reporter, unless a tall tale was going to come crashing down about someone's head...
