Perhaps the most productive thing you could do would be to track down what other news services and major stories have originated from this fraudulent person, and out anything else you can find out about him.

A difficult task, I know, but with so many bullcrap stories from the NY Times, et. al. attributed to anonymous sources, seems quite likely that some of these stories could have been false ones planted by this guy. There seems to have been more than one Greg Packer, and several with far more sinister agendas. Why would this guy do this? Perhaps its just an ego boosting con game, but I would certainly like to know if this guy has any connections to the McCauliffe/Mulholland wing of the Democrats.

Would be quite a redemptive story if your research forced the NY Times to retract major stories, or you outed a Democrat disinfo campaign.

I applaud you gentlemen for asking the tough questions. I have been gone all day and just read this thread.

I am not impressed with the apology after the story has been picked up by other wires, which I believe was the intent.

I would also, as Registered and others have requested, like proof that this person even existed outside the imagination of Mr. Thompson. To my mind the Wilkinson character is no better than the New York Times "unnamed administration officials" that I have complained about for years.

I do hope that people take two lessons from this episode:

1. Any story that is not accurately sourced must be looked at with scepticism.

2. Free Republic is USED by leftists to advance their agenda. We should be more careful and do more to prevent it from happening.

I'm gonna send this whole story over to Sean Hannity, he likes getting to the bottom of these things, I will send it over to Bill O'Reilly as well. I suggest everyone here send the original "Bush Lied" article with the un-edited headline, why and how the title was edited, along with the great work William McKinley did by adding links to his post yesterday and the response from Doug Thompson on that thread along with links to tonights thread.

The more people involved in this serious matter, the quicker we ferret out who the telling lies and who is not

Intel cant and wont issue a public statement decrying the vast amount of BS that is currently making the rounds.
Suffice it to say, that any real Intel resource who talks to the press has an agenda, normally approved through official channels, more or less.Often more.
Dont feel too stupid.Many reporters are information mushrooms.Kept in the dark and spoon fed manure.
Reporters are predictably and incredibly succeptible to the allure of an "inside" source.

This story has very disturbing ramifications. It smells like a KGB "sleeper" who is now, appropriately, getting his paycheck from the DNC.
