Amazing piece - one of the most striking comments, to me, was his comparison of "tribes" in America to tribes in Africa.
A definite recommended reading........

4CJ - thanks for the ping; Valin, great post. A first hand, honest account of the state of affairs in Africa is good to hear.

I agree. I'll bump this more than once today if I get the chance.

Moving, disturbing, educational. Wonder what's come of the writer since then?

Thanks for the ping. An emotionally, exhausting read, but well worth the price of admission.
I wonder if any of if the author's views on Africa every made into the Washington Post. Doubtful.

I know, and you should be proud of your ancestral background. The Africans I have met are truly wonderful people. But Africa needs real help and God is so willing to intervene on their behalf. He's doing it now but you never hear about it from the liberal media. I'm Norwegian-American and I love Norway. It's natural to seek your roots and to embrace them. We are all more than just Americans. Being Afro-Centric, in what I understand, is to believe everything originated in Africa. That's not true but Africa has much history from which we can learn. It's always interested me. I loved ancient history in high school and Africa has much history that is interesting. I hope I didn't offend you by my remarks. I certainly didn't intend it to be offensive but I see professors teaching kids all about afro-centricity and it's just not true history. Mxxx

An estimated 11,100,000 black slaves were brought to the Americas. Their destinations were:
Brazil 4,000,000
Spanish Empire 2,500,000
British West Indies 2,000,000
French West Indies 1,600,000
Dutch West Indies 500,000
North America & U.S. 500,000
Many people talk casually about "millions" of slaves being brought to America as part of an "African Holocaust." In fact, fewer than five percent of the Africans who made the "middle passage" came to what is now the United States and were better cared for than in any other part of the New World. (Hugh Thomas, The Slave Trade, Oxford University Press, 1997.)

"If someone could bottle the recipe and make the rest of the world take a dose, he'd be revered forever as a peacemaker."
It has been bottled already - its called the Declaration of Idependance and the Bill of Rights. More people, including some members of the Supreme Court, should read them and contemplate their meaning.
Thank God I'm an American!

I was afraid of that. Liberals just don't connect the dots, do they? They have a near-death experience, get all choked up about how precious life is... position on abortion? "Oh, I'm pro-choice!"
And on it goes. Sigh.
So maybe a conservative isn't a liberal who got mugged. Maybe he's a liberal who got mugged AND had some intellectually/psychically-transforming work go on inside his cranium.

Thank God for the White man, and a thank you to him, from an American Minority. Us whities can be quite brutal ourselves when we get it wrong. God will distinguish us on a case by case basis.
It isn't a matter of melanin level. All humans are capable of obscene brutality and divine compassion. I really comes down to the culture you are surrounded with, and what your shared values are.
If a culture tolerates, nay, encourages hate and evil, then the people immersed there will feel justified in doing evil. They will see it as the norm.
It is for this reason that the idea of cultural relativism is one of the most destructive concepts to come out of Academia. The Nazis, the Aztecs, the Khymer Rouge, the Hutus, the Taliban; all are so manifestly inferior to American culture in sheer terms of the value of human life that there can be no rational defense of cultural relativism.
The very fact that we look back on our past and abhor what we did to minorities in this country puts us light years ahead of the sinkholes of humanity that exist in Africa today. There, the ruling classes still accept that ones innate tribal affiliation is a unquestioned justification to enslave and murder those of a different race or tribe.
Western Democratic Civilization is not perfect. But it's better than anything else going, by orders of magnitude.

As my friend (Powderhorn) says sometime in the mid 70s many of us stepped throught the doorway and left the peter-pan lifestyle behind. IE. we grew up.
what is it they say about insainity as doing the samething over and over and expecting a different result.
