I guessed Jewish, because most of the SD members were Jewish.
Aha! How long had the uncle been in this country and was he a citizen?

The McCarthy story has been made into fact by constant repetition. The element of truth in the accusations is that inevitably many bureaucrats abused their authority and used security concerns wrongly.

Abused their authority? Are you talking about OUR federales? Nawwwwwww (/sarcasm)
I've been asking what McCarthy himself (and his family) said in the years after the furor died down and the lies began to exponentially multiply.

Great article about Ann, " TREASON", and McCarthy; at last . The vile and stupid diatribes, posted against Ann, her ook, and McCarthy, have all been part and paarcel of the same kind of propaganda filled smear jobs, the left is known for; devoid of facts, full if innuendo, and outright garbage. It's past time, that the FREEPERs, who've believed the muck, wake up and learn the truth; instead of heaping calumny, of all sorts, on Ann and Joe.

Your husband couldn't pick his relatives; but, that's the way it is. Tough break for him, but I'd rather he didn't get that apprenticeship AND McCarthy had NOTHING to do with his losing it.
To: lainie
All I know is that McCarthy died young from alcoholism. I think he was not really up to the task. But undoubtedly he was under tremendous pressure and after Monmouth he got, I think. no support from the White House.

The ridiculous term ' THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST ", which the media flung at JFK and the members of his administration was, like the " CAMELOT " crap, all made up out of thin air.
Of course there were others, some, I dare say, far MORE qualified, but not given the jobs. Yes, payback, cronyism, hacks, and old man Kennedy's paybacks.

I can't even imagine controversy among Conservatives over the notion of widespread communist infiltration in our government, society and lives. The controversy isn't so much that Anne is wrong. Its just considered by many kinder, gentler republicans poor form to embarrass our political adversaries by insisting upon airing unflattering historical facts.
Better we remember our place & not make a fuss.

Actually, I didn't mean to go off on you (I suspected the sarcasm) but the mere idea of Conservatives (and they are out there) not being dialed in on this stuff has always been the realm of the Twilight Zone to me. Your post was merely a trigger.
My apologies.

You know I remember a film made for television in the 80s I believe, titled "Tailgunner Joe". It was a hit piece on McCarthy in the typical Hollywood fashion. At the end they showed him deranged and mentally ill.
I wish that conservatives had a film institute to produce an accurate portrayal of the real McCarthy.
It reminds me of two other powerful historical characters that were wrongly villified in Hollywood films, Richard M. Nixon in "All the President's Men" and Captain William Bligh in "Mutiny on the Bounty".
Richard Nixon has never been accurately portrayed in film. The real Bligh was finally portrayed accurately by Anthony Hopkins in "The Bounty".

It was quite a big deal, he was written up in the papers, I've seen them myself. A week before he was to start, he received a telegram simply stating that his "services will no longer be needed." I'm not denying that may have happened, but the aerospace industry is the most capricious "profession" I have ever seen. As an astronautical engineer I got my TS, and beyond TS clearances yadeyadeya...but when the Soviets up and gave up in '88 - the entire aerospace industry collectively said TS to their workers and went off to make toasters (actually true of one company that made inertial guidance systems for MX - a pretty funny story), credit checking systems and auto parts.
Be thankful, in a way, that your husband had the freedom to live and be free, because I'm glad I'm out of an industry where you can lose your clearance and thus your job because of a late Macy's bill (Almost happened to a fellow IBM'er who I worked with in high-clearance work). What BS.

"Digging out a skunk is a dirty, smelly business. No doubt, but weren't the average joes worried about the tactics used at the time? I mean, did this guy go about to extract skunks while messing up a few other's dens? Note: my history may either be lacking or twisted by recent interpretation.

No doubt, but weren't the average joes worried about the tactics used at the time? Not at all. McCarthy had high approval ratings. Only in NYC and Hollywood, mainly, was there concern--and those people were supporters of Stalin. Check out page 101.

No, the " average Joe ", who had never fclirted nor joined the Communist Party/ one of their fronts was more than delighted with the investigation and McCarthy , believe it or not, was a HERO to most.

What about the 152 waivers of security approval by John F. Kennedy?<<< More currently, what about the hundreds of Clinton appointees that started serving in the White House in sensetive jobs requiring secret or top secret clearances that never were passed by the FBI and were kept on by Clinton anyway?
Didn't Gary Aldridge expose this in "Unlimited Access"? I remember it was a huge flap at the time - someone help me refresh my memory.

You are correct. They never went through clearance and they stayed; well, most of them.
