Viacom has shelved plans to launch Outlet, a 24-hour cable channel aimed at gays, according to the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network, an online news service operated by PlanetOut Partners. It said that it had received a statement from the company saying that "due to the current economic climate, the timetable has slowed down for the development of a new network dedicated to programming to the gay and lesbian audience. We will keep the media informed of new developments." However, the news service pointedly observed that the economic climate did not deter Viacom for buying a controlling stake in Comedy Central from AOL Time Warner for $1.13 billion or from launching Spike TV.

I heard that what killed the deal was the Hostess Snack Cake company filed a lawsuit because they felt that all of the twinkies would give their product a bad name.

"Outlet"? You'd think they'd call it "Inlet".

Besides, Bravo pretty much already is the Gay Channel.

Well, programming is kind of limited. Christopher Lowell, Liberace concert footage, and Funny Girl, that's about it. Maybe Ellen DeGeneres would host the late night talk show.

Don't forget reruns of Rosie O'Doughnut fooling all of the "breeders" into thinking she is Ms. Nice.

    A 'Gay' channel.
It would have as much appeal to the masses as 'Ellen'.
Fantastically popular the 'Ellen Show' is now on its several years of being cancelled.

Maybe 2.2% of the US population wasn't enough to carry such a channel in the first place? Yea, yea, they say it 10% but it isn't. Just a very small percentage of the population that is TOO LOUD. Especially after the idiots on the US Supreme Court gave this super minority special rights.

They realized that no-one would pay extra for it. So it would have to be included for free in "standard" cable; even then, many cable systems would not broadcast it or allow it to be blocked immediately.

Since I moved, my new cable provider doesn't carry Bravo. I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

They do, that is when they aren't showing "Reversal of Fortune" and Cirque du Soleil.
To: ikka
Is it going to shown exclusively in rest stop bathrooms?

Was it aimed at gay men or lesbians too? I think there should be a channel devoted to lesbians with strong daytime programming...Maybe then I could visit the damn health club locker room without feeling like I'M a lamb being watched like by a pack of frickin' she wolves.
