Organizers of a campaign to recall Gov. Gray Davis shut down their paid signature-gathering effort Monday, saying they have enough voter signatures to trigger what would be a historic election to remove a sitting California governor.

It took most of the day to get the word out via cellular phone to 1,200 petition circulators, who were told to pack up the card tables and clipboards they had staffed since mid-May at shopping centers from Yuba City to Barstow to the Mexican border.

Update from the Recall Gray Davis Committee
The Honorable Howard Kaloogian, Chairman
http://www.RecallGrayDavis.Com

Last Call for Recall Petitions !

Monday, July 7, 2003 – 6:30 P.M.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You read right – this is the FINAL call for all Recall Gray Davis petitions. If you have a petition – even if it has just ONE signature on it – fill out the bottom portion of the petition (the “Declaration of Person Circulating Section of Recall Petition” box) and send it back to us IMMEDIATELY!

We are going to do our final turn-ins of signatures this week. So rush rush rush to your post office and send your completed petitions to:

RECALL GRAY DAVIS COMMITTEE
P.O. BOX 1445
SACRAMENTO, CA 95812

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will the Secretary of State
Count the Signatures?

There is still a great deal of confusion and conflicting information concerning the counting and validating of signatures on recall petitions.

The Secretary of State has conducted himself in such a way as to make it very clear that serving the people and doing an honorable job will not be his concerns as he administers the qualification of the recall measure.

After we asked our supporters to contact his office and express their desire to see him handle the recall effort with honor and fairness, the Secretary of State had his staff shut down the department´s email system and then turned off the voice mail system in the Secretary of State´s Executive Office. Apparently feedback from the public is something that Secretary Shelley abhors.

Well, don´t feel bad, because the Secretary of State hasn´t been very communicative with the county elections officials he is supposed to be working with in regards to the handling of recall petitions.

When the counties and recall proponents have attempted to resolve the various issues surrounding the counting and validation of signatures, his office has been evasive and duplicitous.

His conduct has been so appalling that Ann Reed, President of the California Association of Clerks and Elections Officials, issued a scathing letter to the Secretary of State´s office on June 26, 2003.

In the letter, Ms. Reed declared:

“To date we have not been provided with sufficient guidance on how to conduct that verification, and despite numerous calls to your office over the past months by many county election officials, we have been told that your office is discussing the issue and is unwilling to provide any guidance at this time. Now that the verification trigger has been reached, we cannot wait any longer for a response from your office. We must move forward with the verification process and so we are sending you a list of the questions we have posed to your office, and how we intend to answer them.”

Saturday, July 26
Recall Gray Davis RALLY/FAIRE
We Need You in Sacramento

By the end of the day today you should have mailed back your last recall petition(s) and you will be fully up to speed on our continuing efforts to ensure that the Recall Gray Davis signatures are being counted and verified.

The next item on the agenda is a very important one.

On Saturday, July 26 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM we will be rallying our supporters at the State Capitol. This won´t be any normal political rally – sure we´ll have speeches by the leading supporters of the recall effort.

But, what will be different is that this will be part rally and part celebration. We´ve accomplished a great deal by collecting enough signatures to qualify the first recall election against a statewide elected official in California history. But we have a lot of hard work ahead of us to ensure the YES on RECALL campaign succeeds.

Radio stations and their hosts and staff from all over the state will be coming to Sacramento and setting up booths at the Recall Gray Davis Rally & Faire. This will be a great day for the entire family to come out and enjoy a full range of activities for everyone (including the kids).

But most importantly we need to show the world the size and strength of the recall effort. We are inviting every media outlet in the state and the leading national and international news organizations to come and cover this Recall Gray Davis Rally & Faire.

We must have thousands of supporters hailing from every part of the state – and from every political party – represented.

So won´t you please RSVP to the following email address right away:

Rally@RecallGrayDavis.com

DISCOUNT HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS:

When considering hotel accommodations we recommend as one option the Best Western Sutter House/Ponderosa Inn. Located at 11th + H Streets in downtown Sacramento the hotel is just a few blocks away from the State Capitol and best of all – they´ve offered a special discount to anyone who calls and asks for the “Recall Gray Davis” room special for the weekend of July 25-27.

The Best Western Sutter House/Ponderosa Inn
Telephone: (916) 441-1314

Mention “Recall Gray Davis” and
Receive the Special Discounted Rate

You may also FAX reservations to: (916) 441-5961.

The information they need for your reservation:

Name
Address
Credit Card
Expiration Date
Arrival and Departure Date

DISCOUNT AIRFARE:

There are still $60 fun fares available on Southwest Airlines for San Diego to Sacramento and Los Angeles to Sacramento flights. Logon to www.Southwest.com to book a reservation and lock in these great rates.

United Airlines through their United Express/Skywest service also has airfare between southern California airports and Sacramento for as little as $183.00 roundtrip. Logon to www.United.com for reservations and more information.

DISCOUNT GROUND TRANSPORTATION:

If flying isn´t your style, you can also make it to the giant Sacramento rally by bus! Greyhound has some incredibly cheap deals from every conceivable part of the state to Sacramento. Plus, you can receive additional discounts if you are a member of the military, a senior citizen, or a student. Check out www.Greyhound.com for more information.

Amtrak also offers some good alternatives to flying or taking a long bus trip. It also is a good service for those in the Bay Area who don´t like to deal with traffic. A roundtrip from Oakland to Sacramento will cost you about $35 and the Amtrak station is downtown – not too far from lodging options, including our recommendation that you take advantage of the Recall Gray Davis Committee discount at the Best Western Sutter House/Ponderosa Inn. Go to www.Amtrak.com for schedules and fares.

BRING YOUR MOTORHOMES!!!!

We have a lot of supporters who own a motorhome or trailer who have expressed interest in driving to the Sacramento area and camping for the weekend and bringing their RV to the State Capitol for the rally.

For a listing of campgrounds and RV parks in the area CLICK HERE. You can also search online for great camping opportunities in the Sierra Nevada Mountains including the Tahoe National Forest Area.

Some other campgrounds in the region include the Auburn KOA: and a couple others with listing information HERE and finally the Auburn State Recreation Area CLICK HERE.

"The signature drive picked up steam in late June as voters reacted to news that the state would triple annual car-registration fees because of budget woes."

Bwahahahahahahahaha! Talk about pouring gas on the fire. Way to go, Davis! More lib madness.

"You put enough money behind an effort and you can buy enough signatures to qualify anything for the ballot," Salazar said."

Spoken like a Dem who knows how to do it. I STILL question the last election. It was very close, and Salazar and his cronies REALLY know how to manipulate a ballot box. Keep eyes peeled for a few dirty tricks in the next few weeks. Don't trust a one of 'em.

That's something I was wondering about. Peace "pulled the trigger" on the VLF, and I thought, "He just shot down Davis as well." Buh bye pencil-necked-geek!

Hey Ernest, is the tripling of the vehicle registration going to be retroactive to January '03? Or does it not become effective until November?

He's right about fear. The electorate can't call for the guillotine. Yet.

"If the people want me to present my credentials one more time, I have no fear of the electorate," he told reporters. "Five times they've elected me to statewide office, twice as governor, and I'm happy to present my credentials and demonstrate the progress we've made."

Governor Doofus, what credentials, what progress?

You signed off on a socialist piece of legislation calling for Kyoto Accord like testing CO2 emissions. You raised the license plate taxes beyond belief. You stood by and allowed Prop. 187 to be destroyed, after a majority of this states voters signed of on it. To this day you are pushing for more, and more, handouts to the hordes of illegal aliens in this state.

You moron, you took a budget surplus of around $10 Billion, and made it a budget surplus of $38 Billion!

We are going to the voting booths, so take the time to pack your bags; November is not all that far away.

You are history.... you imbecile!

It is not retroactive. The DMV needs time to make the conversion. The last I read, they were talking about a 10/1 effective date.

Fortunately, both my cars renew in August. In August of 2004, it will cost me $850 MORE to register both vehicles.

Hopefully by then Davis will be out and the court case that has been filed on the tax will be won. If not, there is still the McClintock propositions that will effectively repeal the entire car tax.
