FM 517 in Galveston County runs east and west, but it's now the landmark that could split one congressional district into two.
Basically, that allows us to have a bigger voice at the table, said Senate Republican Executive Committees Ken Clark.
History says that's not the case, said Nick Lampsons Chief of Staff Tom Combs.
For all intents and purposes, anyone living south of FM 517 would be in Tom Delay's new congressional district, while every one north of 517 would be in the newly drawn Ninth Congressional District, currently held by Democrat Nick Lampson.
Lampson would share a bit of Galveston County, but most folks would be represented by whoever holds the 22nd Congressional Seat. It now belongs to the House Majority.
"With that position comes a lot of clout and power to get things done for the people of Galveston County, said Clark.
Combs agreed that Delay has a lot of power, but that's about all he'll agree on.
"Areas that are divided up tend not to get more representation, but in fact get less because they don't play as big as part in a congressman's district," he said.
"That's just sour grapes on his office's part," said Clark.
That could be because the two re-drawn districts would both be leaning right, which would mean Lampson could be out. Combs says he's not concerned with that as much as cutting the county up, regardless of which party holds the seats.
The community doesn't get to speak with one voice. They're torn between two congressional districts which lessens their impact, said Combs.
Its an impact felt for better or worse, for people on both sides of the political aisle and both sides of 517.
