I used to live in Bozeman (went to MSU for 4 years). I'd often make my way down to Yellowstone for three-day weekends. In the spring the buffalo hang out in the middle of the road and in parking lots, mostly yearling calves. They are deceptively benign looking. They stand there doing nothing, looking at the ground and when someone timidly walks up, POW....
I've seen several lucky people attacked over the years where they were able to jump behind their car, or they were just shoved to the ground. I can totally see how a bull with a horn could kill someone
