I happened to catch the ABC evening news as they were reporting this. (lead story) I didn't catch the reporter's name (white male) but he closed by saying "There's been no motive put forth for this slaying, but it should be noted that 4 of the 5 dead are Black". Now I know that if the situation was reversed the reporter would never state this, substituting White for Black. Nor, should he. But it's alright for this douchebag to try to inflame feelings by insinuating racism because...uh...because?

I also heard on MSNBC that it was a racially motivated killing.

Headlines this morning's Chicago Sun-Times said that the shooter was A HOTHEAD.

Anyone report why he stopped? Did he run out of bullets or shotgun shells? Was he threatened by resistance?

It appears he didn't use the rifle, using his shotgun for the close-up work instead. He may have had the rifle along so that he'd not be outgunned by a rifle-equipped police or citizen shooter working from a distance, or to keep pistol-armed police or security personnel at a respectable safe distance while he finished up what he was doing.

We may know a bit more once we learn who his chosen targets were and a little more about them.

Lockheed Martin Statement Regarding Shooting Incident at Meridian, Mississippi Subassembly Plant

MARIETTA, GA (July 8, 2003) -

A Lockheed Martin employee at the company's Meridian, Miss., facility entered the plant today at approximately 10 a.m. Central Time with a gun and shot an unknown number of people before taking his own life. At least five of the victims are believed to be dead and a number of people are wounded. Lockheed Martin officials are working with local law enforcement officials who are on the scene. Names of the dead and wounded are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy and express our deepest sympathies to the families. Additional details will be released as soon as available.

Well, it gets a little more complicated than that. It seems Williams shot 14 of his co-workers, eight of those being black. Of the five who have died so far, four were.

That means he killed one of the six white folks he shot [assuming no orientals, mojados or Innuit in that diverse workforce, possibly not a safe bet] and four out of eight of the blacks. It's a bit difficult to assemble a working theory without more details, but it does sound suspiciously like he was either after supervisory personnel or those he felt were deserving of his final attention.
