My #68 still standsMaybe, but it's listing to port dramatically. Those of us who cautioned about Bush's not being a conservative were reassured, in tones ranging from hushed to screaming, that he only said those things to get elected. Once elected, he wouldn't be like Daddy, but more conservative. Since we had no other realistic candidate, and since we hadn't given up at that time, we voted for him. Others with my reservations didn't--they left, either voluntarily or involuntarily. FR is poorer without them.
Now what can we say about George? We were right; you were wrong.

This must mean that Bush really endorses and approves of all these big government programs that force Americans to work more and more for the government and less and less for themselves.

During the whole 2000 campaign, I can't tell you the number of people who had a prejudicial, anti-W attitude based on his dad. They said, "He's not conservative! He's just like his father: a moderate who'll go with the flow." I kept assuring them that the son was a different animal - and I still think he is in a vast number of ways. But some of this stuff is inexplicable and distressing. It's not what I thought was going to end up happening. Like I said last week: if you would have told me in the 80s or 90s that a Republican in the White House with a Republican majority in the House and Senate would pass the largest spending program in 40 years, I wouldn't have believed it.

Now what can we say about George? We were right; you were wrong. I never thought that George was a "true conservative"...but I knew he was a sight more conservative than Al Gore (maybe saner too) and I remembered 1992.
