That is my tax money he is sending wasting over there, not his.

I don't want a red-cent sent over to Africa. Especially when our border with Mexico is wide open, and the influx of illegal aliens is tearing apart this country.

No Conservative President would flush taxpayer monies down the toilet like this. It is becoming obvious that GWB is not a Conservative, and is a RINO at best.

Africa ought to be wealthy. It is fertile (outside of the Sahara) and has vast amounts of oil and other natural resources. The thing that it is missing is democracy and the rule of law.

If Bush can jumpstart that, then perhaps Africa can quit being a beggar continent and take its rightful place on the world stage.

It's impressive to watch what Bush is doing by demanding that the African nations **work** for their new aid and investment monies.

They have to take concrete action to insure that Mugabe steps down in Zimbabwe, and they have to reform their educational and aid systems, for instance.

Well, once you've got the beggar working, he's already on the road to full recovery.

It's the money-for-nothing that's such a problem, and that's just been ended (save for the pitances that guilty Europe freely gives Africa).

That's precisely how to jump start Africa's recovery.

I agree with both of you. I was taught charity begins at home. Well There are plenty of problems here in America that need fixing first. But more to the point. This article reads like a " American Guilt" trip from paragraph one. Don't appreciate it one iota. The "Europeans" have as much guilt to share as America. Matter of fact so does the whole world. The Europeans were the prime benefactors of that "trade." So don't lay a guilt trip on the USA. The End of slavery is a "western" ideal. One further note, If not for the British fleet cut backs the slave trade ,now thriving, off the horn of Africa, would not exisit. How do these "African Leaders" purportedly Deal with that? Or are they?

Liberia is an American interest. ( Believe me my uncle and I discussed this....I'm still hurting over it.) But as for the rest of Africa..... That's a different story, namely Europes, and they need to step up to the plate.

The commemts by the so-called conservatives criticizing the Buchananites and Libertarians for their views show how far to the left conservatism has drifted. Rockefeller Republicanism is back in vogue for many. It took one term for Bush one to destroy the good will Reagan established with his conservative principles. It is taking Bush two the same length of time to destroy the good will he had when he took office from the Liar-in Chief.
