My impression re: George C. Marshall, is that she was critical of Marshall's willingness to follow the Roosevelt path in the immediate wake of the Second World War. Only after Churchill threw down the gauntlet at Fulton was the cold war on in earnest.

She does not accuse Marshall of treason. She does accuse him of gullibility on some issues.

Coulter's central thesis remains despite the invective hurled at her: the Democratic Party was suborned by the First Chief Directorate of the NKVD. This occured during the 1930's when young radicals were brought from colleges to work in government during the New Deal. Whittaker Chambers was one of the few who turned from being a spy to being a patriot. Hiss remained in the pay of Stalin, as well as Harry Dexter White, Greenglass, the Rosenbergs and numerous others.

The Democrats as a party were not concerned about the penetration of their party and the Government. They had too much invested in Roosevelt's postwar vision of a United Nations and a grand bargain with Stalin. Again and again, they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the realization that Stalin, Beria, and that crowd was an assemblage of butchers such as the world would not see until the rise of Mao.

Methinks that Joe McCarthy achieved far more than Conason would give him credit for, and I await some serious historical scholarship on the era. Thankfully, the one conservative who didn't overreach was Nixon, and he would survive to fight another day.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Ask yourself why you're spending so much time on ad hominem attacks directed at me.

Nice pic-witching by the Salon art department. Not only does Ann have her arm around Senator McCarthy, she appears to be touching Roy Cohn in an inappropriate place...

That's a very reasonable assessment of the situation...and especially of Marshall.

It's hard to recreate those times. So much has changed. I recently watched the 1959 classic "North by Northwest". Cary Grant walks up to a hotel desk and asks for a female guest's room number. The clerk gives it to him without a second thought. That's how much trust we've lost.

With respect to the substance of the book, does anyone really think that "liberals have a preternatural gift for always striking a position on the side of treason" or that liberals hate America?

Yes.

I just bought Treason tonight, and started reading it. Already it is just right on target, and Ann is telling it like it is. This review is proving her point exactly. This moron is saying exactly the things she is writing about, and yet he calls her a liar? Such irony!

Having read the first chapter of "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism......

Just the first chapter? You appear to be saying you have read 16 pages of a 292 page book (besides the 40+ pages of notes). You did read the entire book, didn't you? Or are Cliffs Notes out already?

"Political discourse"? You really think the liberal left wants to engage in "political discourse"? Who are you speaking of? Bill? Hillary? Daschle? Carville? Begalla? Colmes? I'm from Texas. We have Democrats here that think "political discourse" is either getting their way or it's the highway, to Oklahoma. The left does not want "consensus". They want to win.

It's always interesting to see how people rationalize their double standards. Thanks for writing.

How do you explain the Cold War consensus, which included strong Democratic support for the Tonkin Resolution and Persian Gulf War?

Expedience

When you read the book, a wise thing to do before commenting upon it, you will see Coulter refers to the battle fought within the Democrat party between anticommunist and soviet Soviet sympathizers. By the end of the 1960s, the latter won. They control the party today. There was not a "strong Democratic support" for the Persian Gulf War nor was there much support for invading Iraq. Yes, many Democrats voted for it last fall. But only for cover before the election. After the election they stepped up attacks on every aspect of the operation and assigned some pretty disgusting motives for Bush wanting to take out Saddam.

Btw...is the Clinton excuse of "everybody does it" going to be standard from your side now? I read one lefty after the next claim Ann Coulter is "just like" Michael Moore.

Writing books like Treason or Stupid White Men ...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation! does not make us stronger as a nation.

And sowing dissention against the founding principles "does" make us stronger?

But what they have in common is more significant: a hysterical hatred of their political opponents and an ability to say anything to advance their causes (and extremely lucrative careers).
