www.lindows.com Press Release ^ | June 25, 2003 | Cheryl Schwarzman

SAN DIEGO --June 25, 2003-- Lindows.com, Inc. (www.lindows.com) announced today the launch of LindowsOS 4.0 (www.lindows.com/40) which brings industry-first features to Linux desktops such as comprehensive Plug & Play support, ad blocking, spam blocking and pornography blocking along with a continued emphasis on ease-of-use and affordability.

"The argument from Microsoft against desktop Linux is that it may be affordable from the start, but the long term maintenance destroys those
early savings," said Michael Robertson, chief executive officer of Lindows.com, Inc. "For the first time, LindowsOS 4.0 with its Zero
Maintenance goals makes Linux far easier and lower cost to maintain then a comparable Microsoft Windows XP computer. In addition, we're leap frogging Microsoft by unveiling a suite of operating system features to help users block spam, ads and pornography from their desktop."

LindowsOS 4.0 is available immediately preinstalled on personal computers from retailers online (www.lindows.com/featuredbuilder) and available on CD for $59.95 MSRP (www.lindows.com/40) ($49.95 for US digital download only). To locate a retailer visit, www.lindows.com/featuredreseller. Users of LindowsOS 3.0 are eligible for a free upgrade to version 4.0 by visiting their "my.lindows" (http://my.lindows.com) account and downloading the software.

LindowsOS Brings Unprecedented Ease of Use To Linux

LindowsOS 4.0 alleviates the considerable technical expertise previously required to properly setup and maintain Linux on a PC. A sub-10 minute installation program correctly installs the operating system and identifies and configures all hardware including video cards, ethernet, sound cards and devices with no intervention required from the user.

After installation, the LindowsOS "Zero Maintenance" initiative means a single mouse click can install or update more than a thousand programs. Any user can select and install a custom suite of applications digitally using any Internet connection.

Robust Plug & Play support for Linux also debuts with LindowsOS 4.0. Devices such as flash memory devices, Smart Media, CDRs, hard disks, and DVDs immediately appear on the desktop when plugged in via USB 1.0, USB 2.0 or firewire. See www.lindows.com/devices for more information.

LindowsOS 4.0 has improved support for thousands of other peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, and digital cameras from major manufacturers such as Canon, Epson, HP, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Ricoh, and Sony.

LindowsOS 4.0 Is First OS To Block Spam, Viruses, Popups and Pornography

LindowsOS is the first PC operating system to include technology to block the most annoying and time-consuming interruptions on the Internet including intrusive advertising, pornography, email spam and viruses.

Included with LindowsOS is SpamSafe, a user-configurable spam blocking tool that "learns" which email messages are spam and routes them to a special spam folder while leaving all the good mail in your Inbox. This Bayesian-based spam fighting technology provides the most efficient, auto-adaptive technology while eliminating false positives. See SpamSafe in action at www.lindows.com/spamsafeshot.

LindowsOS 4.0's AdSafe technology is built into the web browser giving users the ability to block pop-up ads from all sites, but also adds a new feature to allow pop-ups from certain online banking and shopping sites which may use pop-ups to conduct business transactions.

A 14-day free trial of SurfSafe (www.lindows.com/surfsafe) is included with LindowsOS. This award-winning technology blocks objectionable web sites while still allowing users to utilize search engines and browse the richness of the Internet. LindowsOS 4.0 with SurfSafe is the first operating system to comply with the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) making it ideally suited for schools, libraries and other environments needing a safer computing experience.

A 14-day free trial to VirusSafe (www.lindows.com/virussafe), a Linux virus protection program, is also included with LindowsOS giving users a tightly integrated protection from viruses.

Affordable, Microsoft compatible Operating system

LindowsOS 4.0 offers comprehensive compatibility with Microsoft Windows based documents and services. Using LindowsOffice (www.lindows.com/office), LindowsOS users can share, view and edit Microsoft Word documents (.doc files), Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xls files) and Microsoft PowerPoint presentation files (.ppt files) while keeping their original format to facilitate cross-platform compatibility.
LindowsOS 4.0 can easily integrate into a Microsoft Windows dominated network and share files, disks, and printers on the network using intuitive control panels or desktop icons to configure. LindowsOS 4.0 interoperability combined with affordable Linux pricing, makes LindowsOS ideal for the business environment. A typical 50 person company can expect to pay 83% less when deploying LindowsOS software (www.lindows.com/50pc) versus deploying Microsoft software (www.lindows.com/xpprice).

Other Features In LindowsOS 4.0

Version 4.0 is packed with new features designed to offer PC users the best consumer experience including integrated multimedia tutorials, a graphic redesign, improved Wi-Fi support and much more. A complete list of features in LindowsOS 4.0 can be found at www.lindows.com/newfeatures.

Even if your profile is so good that it describes me exactly also, I must say that the MS press release is a pretty cheap shot. Why not its own thread?

We switched to all Mac machines (OS X) here at home and at the office after 15+ years with Microsoft machines. We are still totally elated.

Linux? Unix (OS X) is the ticket.

Macs have their advantages for certain applications, but they are too expensive, bang-for-the-buck-wise, for many situations.

Linux and NetBSD have the advantage of running on all sorts of hardware.
