The teenager had broken into Stordahls garage and started a fire, then advanced on the homeowner even after being warned to stop. An autopsy revealed that Choate had a blood alcohol content of 0.31, almost four times the legal limit to drive. Family and friends say he might have been confused and thought he was in his own garage.
Ok...I don't know the whole "Choate" story here, but I'm having a hard time finding the problem here. If the homeowner was in danger, the BAC of the perp shouldn't matter. Neither should what his family and friends say that they think he was doing there.

Anybody got a link to the "Choate" story?

If the BBC is doing this investigative journalism, you can be assured that the report will be a dishonest, left-wing hack job.

In the local incident, a grand jury decided that homeowner Linn Stordahl was justified in shooting Anthony Choate on April 19. Thank the Lord that Oregon is not yet like England in this regard.

"The teenager had broken into Stordahls garage and started a fire."Here in Florida arson is a forcible felony. The use of deadly force by citizens is justified to stop or prevent a forcible felony.

A question that's a little off-side, can anyone tell me the correct pronunciation of that name "Choate"?

The shooter should have gotten a reward.
Say something like 5 or 10 percent of the future liver transplant this guy
would probably have been provided at taxpayer expense while incarcerated.

The burglar who survived, Brendon Fearon, plans to sue Martin for the leg wound he suffered. yet another compelling argument for:

The issue so troubled Tony Blair that he wondered in a memo, which was leaked, whether (the) Labour (Party) was losing touch with public opinion, Violation of the man's natural right to self-defense apparently didn't bother Tony at all. Nope, what mattered to Tony was re-election.

In the Oregon case, the local liberal paper (Statesman Journal) tried everything it could to paint Choate as just a good kid who made a mistake. The criminal's delinquent friends have been harassing the home owner. This city, Salem Oregon has a police force that was gutted by a liberal mayor, so it's either self defence or be a victim.

There is a lobby in this country that says the average man has the right to protect himself , and damn the cost, Johnston said. The Choate case provides a cautionary note to say this is not always the way to go. This kind of thing can happen. The BBC is not merely biased, it's out of its %$^#ing mind.

It's not just a gun issue. The British seem to have an aversion to defending themselves against any kind of assault. I knew a young man who was attacked by two others with knives in a robbery attempt. He managed go twist one's arm around and stab the attacker in the thigh with his own knife. The victim recieved over five hundred stitches and a charge which would be our equivalent of assault with a deadly weapon. He went to trial and was acquitted at considerable expense and inconvenience. The attackers were convicted but didn't get any jail time.

actually I sort of like this idea. I want the *socialist* Brits to be afraid (very afraid) of the United States, and I want the sane conservative Brits to realize there is still a place of refuge.

The teenager had broken into Stordahls garage and started a fire, Family and friends say he might have been confused and thought he was in his own garage. So it was this punk's normal custom, to set his garage on fire? Er... how often had he been doing this?
I'm so very glad that the British are sending someone to tell us we've got it all wrong.
Just think, we could have stayed with them, and had Phoney Tony, inbred royalty, bad teeth, and the civilised world's highest rate of home invasions! What were we thinking these 227 years ago? </ sarcasm>
