WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (Reuters) - President Bush said on Friday the United States is still at war and vowed to attack any "terrorist group or outlaw regime" that threatens the United States with mass murder.
Bush's tough message came as he marked the July 4 Independence Day holiday with a flag-waving speech before 25,000 or so military personnel and families at a base where Orville and Wilbur Wright's invention of the first flying machine 100 years ago is being celebrated.
"The United States will not stand by and wait for another attack or trust in the restraint and good intentions of evil men," Bush said on a sun-scorched day in the U.S. heartland.
"We are on the offensive against terrorists and all who support them. We will not permit any terrorist group or outlaw regime to threaten us with weapons of mass murder. We will act, whenever it is necessary, to protect the lives and the liberty of the American people," he said.
A giant American flag provided the backdrop for Bush on a makeshift stage set up on a base airfield. It was flanked by bomber, fighter and attack aircraft including a B-1 bomber and a Stealth F-117 fighter.
DAILY ATTACKS
Bush did not refer directly to the situation in Iraq or the daily attacks on U.S. forces struggling to bring stability there after the ouster of Saddam Hussein and the fall of Baghdad.
Hostile fire has killed 26 American soldiers in Iraq since Bush declared major combat over on May 1. Washington has accused Saddam loyalists of launching the attacks.
A USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll this week found that the share of Americans who said things were going well for U.S. forces in Iraq had dropped to 56 percent from 70 percent a month ago.
Bush spoke more in general about the war on terrorism, which has produced military missions in Afghanistan, the Philippines and Georgia in addition to Iraq.
"Our nation is still at war. The enemies of America plot against us. And many of our fellow citizens are still serving and sacrificing and facing danger in distant places," Bush said.
Bush appeared to be trying to maintain American support for the far-flung military missions around the world.
"Without America's active involvement in the world, the ambitions of tyrants would go unopposed, and millions would live at mercy of terrorists. With Americans' active involvement in the world, tyrants learn to fear, and terrorists are on the run," he said.
FLYING MACHINE
It was in a bicycle shop in nearby Dayton, Ohio, that the Wright brothers built the aircraft they would fly on the North Carolina coast in 1903.
"I wonder what Wilbur and Orville would have thought if they'd have seen that flying machine I came in on today," Bush chuckled, referring to the giant Air Force One 747 that carried him to Ohio.
After his visit, Bush was returning to Washington. First lady Laura Bush has planned a party for the president's 57th birthday on Sunday.
Guests were to watch Washington's July 4 fireworks show from the White House's Truman Balcony.

The Hypocrisy is Appalling - America can do what Israel is not allowed to do. America treats the PLO terrorists and terrorist harborers differently too, instead of supporting their destruction, giving them power and money, and pressuring Israel to conceed land, etc. to them
"The United States will not stand by and wait for another attack or trust in the restraint and good intentions of evil men," Bush said on a sun-scorched day in the U.S. heartland.
You are currently doing so with Abu Mazen (who in turn is Arafat's deputy and one who thinks the same as Arafat).
We are on the offensive against terrorists and all who support them
Sure you are. Why are you supporting the PA then? They have been doing this for 10 years, plus even more while they were just the PLO.
tyrants learn to fear, and terrorists are on the run
I believe the PA terrorists are pretty comfortable with the 30 million you just gave them a few days ago.

Bush expressed the same sentement in his 2002 state of the union address, since then North Korea & Iran have made tremendous advances in their nuclear programs. It appears Bush's threats only apply to nations that can't shoot back.

President George W. Bush calls him a 'man dedicated to peace,' but others say the new Palestinian prime minister is both a terrorist and a Holocaust denier.
The Truth About Mahmoud Abbas
Shoshana Bryen, of the Washington-based Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, puts it bluntly: "The real Abu Mazen is the guy who financed the Munich massacre and is a Holocaust denier and in later years decided to try something else."

Darn it. At first I thought it said "Bush Vows Pre-Emptive Attacks Against Eminem."

Many AMericans share your concerns.
See...The Golan Solution
We are trying to influence our leaders, particularly the State Department where I believe the principle problem lays (although there are others).
At the same time, we must and will continue to prosecute the war ourselves against our enemies. I pray to God in Heaven that the doors are soon opened, and that the scales soon fall from some eyes so as to allow Israel to do the same.

To: yonif
If you knew how to play along, you could see that Bush and gang are giving the Palis a chance to break from their own fascist oppressors. The goal is a wholesale Pali civil war, with all the bad dudes turning on each other like a well executed Mob war. They have been given a chance to make a break from their terrible past, and eliminating Hamas, PIJ and Al Asqua will take time, but the goal shouldn't be in doubt.
Why do kneejerk dimwits continue to underestimate Bush's cunning and strategic sense? He is the best friend Israel has, so be nice.
To: stimpyone
Yeah, sure, they can't shoot back.
I hope no one gives you any booze and firecrackers today.
To: yonif
Yonif, who has been a steady friend and supporter of Israel for years and years?I get weary of the constant harping.Would you prefer we stop givng military aid to Israel so we have no influence? Nothing has worked so far.Have a bit of patience and a sliver of hope.No one trusts Hamas.(How much does the US give Israel in aid?)

Haven't you tried to figure Bush out yet?
To: MEG33
You did not answer my question. How much aid does the US give Israel a year?Who has stood by Israel for years? I believe 3-5 billion a year, which is mostly in loans (which Israel has always paid back.)
The current policy in relationship to Israel is hypocritical in that it breaks our principles and values. It is appeasing terrorists and pressuring Israel to doing things not only we would never do, but that ISRAEL HAS ALREADY DONE in the Olso Accords, 1993-2000 which FAILED. Israel suffered and thousands were murdered. This plan is even worse.

Haven't you tried to figure Bush out yet? I thought I did "those who harbor, support, incite, fund terrorists suffer the fate of terrorists"
The PA does all that, but we give it money, give it power, pressure its enemy Israel to conceed to it. What kind of doctine is this? You will probably say this is some type of strategy of showing the world who the PA really is. We already know who they are, we have the Olso Accords 1993-2000 to prove that. They are the same terrorists. With the same ideology of driving Israel to the sea. Same everything.

Look, I hope that there is strategery at work here, but I agree with you. The forked tongue praise for Mazen, the $30 mill to be spent on more bomb belts, the slaughtered jews (G-d rest their souls), the release of pali murderers from prison to appease the PA so they can do it again... all this tells me something is very, very wrong with the road map. My main problem was that when Bush first announced it he said Arafat had to be GONE before any of this came to pass. Now Arafat is still in control and when I hear Bush talk of a pali state that would be able to legally raise an army and buy weapons, it makes me sick. I fear Israel going the way of South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
