In addition to the main thesis, there are some good points in here too (at least I presume they are, not being intimately familiar with the relevant history) that HUAC mishandled their investigation of Hollywood in certain respects: failing to grasp the importance of the fight over control of unions, focusing on movies that were made and pretty much ignoring the issue of those that weren't made, and alienating the moguls and studio heads (who could have been incorporated as allies).
