Political correctness run amok, Charlie Chan gets canned

Posted on 06/30/2003 7:42:37 PM PDT by Der Blaue Engel

Some tax dodge calling itself the National Asian American Telecommunications Association demanded that Fox Movie Channel cancel their long-awaited Charlie Chan film festival; they said it was offensive to Asians. Fair enough, they want free publicity and this kind of rabble-rousing is a good enough way to get it.

But then Fox FOLDED LIKE YESTERDAY'S LAUNDRY!

The idiots' open letter is here:

http://www.naatanet.org/forumarchive/index.html

And Fox, the conservative's stalwart friend, bends over thus:

"Fox Movie Channel has been made aware that the Charlie Chan films may contain situations or depictions that are sensitive to some viewers. Fox Movie Channel realizes that these historic films were produced at a time where racial sensitivities were not as they are today. As a result of the public response to the airing of these films, Fox Movie Channel will remove them from the schedule."

Now, Charlie Chan films are pure innocent entertainment, and nothing a reasonable person would find offensive. The Charlie Chan character was in fact based on a real-life Asian detective from Hawaii, Chang Apana:

I'm told his decendents are quite proud of the franchise.

This is typical arm-twisting liberalism at its most odious. The Fox front office, who brag about what tough guys they are for giving us Fox News, ought to be made thoroughly ashamed for caving in like this.

They ask for feedback, I say let's give it to them good and hard.

My letter to Fox Movie Channel

Let me guess, some no-name "National Asian Telecommunications Association" out seeking some sort of media exposure whines about "being offended" so FOX will return to its normal dreck that "offends" the sensibilities of the majority culture.

Why is it when Christians complain about being "offended" by the far more slanderous treatment of Christians and Christian values FOX turns its head?

Why is it when stereotype after stereotype is depicted of rednecks being drunk idiots, businessmen always being corrupt and evil, Catholics as being perverts and scoundrels, FOX couldn't care less if rednecks, businessmen and Catholics are offended by the movie themes?

There was a time when the liberals reminded vice-president Dan Quayle that "Murphy Brown" was only a TV show and he shouldn't be "offended" by the disrespectful content. Where are these people to remind these "offended" Asians that this is a part of the American culture?

And what is this god of "Diversity" that we all must worship if we have to constantly worry about some tiny minority possibly being "offended" so that all activities must cease? I guess worship of this "Diversity" perversity transforms this country into not one that appreciates freedom, but rather suffers under the tyranny of the minority. And in the case of this weak minded minority culture that must force its unreasonable and petty demands on a majority culture - FOX is right there to capitulate and screw those who appreciate the older movies.

Does FOX really think that we all sit around in white robes and hoods, clinking long-neck beers and belly laugh coughing up suds through our noses everytime we see something on television, that in its most strained sense might possibly be "offensive" to some weak minded person?

Whatever happened to "Change the Channel!" which has always been the rally-cry of those who defend offensive entertainment? Are the expectations of these "offended" Asian so low that FOX doesn't think that they are capable of finding a non-offensive channel out of the 200+ channels available on any given satellite/cable system?

Quite Frankly, I Am OFFENDED by the spinless pansies in the program department that will fold like last week's laundry all to bow down to the religion of "political correctness". Fortunately I have discovered an act that I can perform that apparently the National Asian Telcommunications Association hasn't been able to figure out - that there are 200+ other channels out there that I can watch instead.

I guess the PD figures that the majority of those watching FOX movie channel are easily offended Asians. I am sure the guys in sales are pleased to hear that FMC, instead of attracting an audience to watch the Charlie Chan movies, will have to make due with the usual ho-hum programs that few ever care to watch for the umpteenth time.

Plus, I have a question: WHICH Asians are offended ?

Maybe it's the Afganistans ? </sarcsam off>

You get off the plane at O'hare, tell the cabbie to take you to Chinatown...where does he take you ?

Wow, it's been a tough week for dapper, mustachioed icons of the past. The PC Mafia whacked Col. Reb earlier this week, and now they've rubbed out Charlie Chan!

I am offended by The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres. Can I get them taken off TV Land? >>>>>>>

Me, too. Also offended by Al and Peg Bundy, and my kids are offended by their kids. And all dads should be offended by all of the (vintage) sitcom dads who were too dumb to ever outwit their wives. And Jewish women should all be offended by Sylvia, Yetta and the Nanny on that show. Is there no end to the PC stupidity???? I'm amazed George Jefferson lasted as long as he did, but then again, it was a trade off, since he and "Weezie" DID move on up to the East Side.
