Amber Alert Issued For Two Florida Children
POSTED: 7:16 a.m. EDT June 30, 2003
MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Two young children were reported missing Monday morning, prompting law enforcement officials to issue a statewide Amber Alert.
Authorities are looking for Lorena and Moises Montano, who were taken by their mother, 32-year-old Nora Montano. She has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, police said, and the children are believed to be in extreme danger.
Lorena, 3, has dirty blonde hair and brown eyes. Moises, 2, has blonde hair and hazel eyes.
Nora Montano might be traveling with her ex-husband, Jose Montano, authorities said. They are possibly traveling in a blue Infiniti.
Amber Alerts are named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl abducted and later found murdered in Arlington, Texas. They are national bulletins, distributed through radio and television broadcasts and electronic highway signs, on kidnapped children and their abductors.

These kids were taken by their parents. Why didn't the parents have custody? Anybody know?

I'm not sure why the mother didn't have custody.
Officer Bill Robertson of the Miramar Police Department said Montano was accompanied by a male wearing camouflage and a ski mask. Police believe that the man may be Montano's ex-husband, Jose Montano.
The children have been in the custody of Lorena Montano's mother since January. Police said that Montano drove her dark blue 1993 Infiniti through the rear sliding door of her mother's house.
Then, Montano and the male rushed into the residence, knocked over one of the children's aunts, and took the children, Robertson said.
Police said Lorena Montano is in the Army, stationed at Fort Houston, Texas. The Infiniti they may be traveling in may have either Texas or Florida tags.

Mom lost custody in January (according to fox news) because of her mental disorders. That is why her mom had the kids.

Maybe these circumstances warrant an Amber alert. But I had hoped the alert wouldn't be used for custody battles. If it is pretty soon the alert will be diluted and will become worthless. It needs to be reserved for stranger abductions, or where the children are in immiment danger (maybe this case, but looks doubtful on the surface).

Bipolar disorder can be properly treated to help the person with the disorder to have a stable life without the manic episodes and deep depression.
My wife has bipolar disorder, but can function normally when she takes her medication regulary. As her husband I do my part to help around the house and to help her to remember to take her medication. There are times when she needs some extra help and we call on her Christian therapist who does a great job of helping my wife think through her problems, and let go of things she has no control over.
It sounds like this lady must not have been getting proper treatment for her bipolar disorder, and so she lost custody of her children. A person with bipolar whos is not properly treated can get very violent or suicidal.

She definitely looked pretty violent, driving a van thru the wall of the house. Sad situation all around. I loved the part of your story about the Christian therapist. The proper treatment, that is wonderful.

The "mom" drove a van thru the wall of her mom's house. Looks like those kids are in pretty imminent danger to me.

Sorry, car thru the wall, sliding glass door.
