"The Times piece contended that the recall effort threatens to plunge a state already reeling from a gigantic budget deficit even deeper into chaos."

Except, if the *recall* is the only problem, the easy answer is to ask Grayout Davis to resign in order to spare the state from all of that "chaos".

In other words, their little lie doesn't hold up.

"The president should demand an end to the recall effort because the nation cannot afford to have California's economy remain stuck in reverse,"

Yes, and California's economy will just MAGICALLY IMPROVE if the recall goes away. Ha...

I still can't decide if the recall is for the best or not (not that it's my call, since I don't live there), but it is perfectly legal and these businessman have no more say than anyone else whether it will ultimately happen or not.

They make it sound as if the petition-gatherers and signers are doing something wrong, and the Father of the Party needs to scold them and put a stop to their misbehaving. In actuality it is entirely a local California issue, and the process is established and protected by the State Constitution. The focus of the petition is not on the 800,000 misbehaving signers, but on the one incompetent governor.

this says Davis is in BIG trouble. It will also peg the democrat party as the party of problems. Gray davis will be the poster boy of the Democrat party. The party of deviants, the party of perverts, the party of Davis.

Gee, what's Bush supposed to do, call in the National Guard and prevent people from signing with the point of a gun?
Or, why not do what Democrats are best at---Have Gray Davis sign an executive order ( stroke of the pen, law of the land bit ), then declare the petition null and void, and have his buddies in the media lie and distort away the egregious abuse of power. Worked for Clinton, didn't it?

When the time is right, he'll quit. Lt. Governor (dem-rat) will get a chance to drive the state into bankrupcy.

Anyway Warren Hellman made one $250 donation. To Dick Gephardt. LOL

So we're talking four diehard Democrats and one very pro-choice Pubbie who also gives to Dems.

"bipartisan group"

Yeah, right! When donkeys fly!!

These people are pitiful ... all they do is badmouth Bush and say it's all his fault for the condition California is in ... and now they want Bush to stop the recall ... idiots! No wonder this state is in such a mess!

White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee on Sunday said the recall effort is a California matter and the White House is not involved.

It's a California matter, snickered Snee.

So how come these so-called leaders are so all-fired dumb?

Because these so-called bi-partisan leaders are all Democrats. See #14.

It was printed as an op-ed piece, not an ad. Otherwise, well said.

A minority wants to stop the majority from due political process....
They wont like what the alternative will be...
Of course then the Prez most likely would interfere

Liberal big business leaders join hands with liberal labor union bosses to ask President Bush to intervene in what is essentially a state matter? I guess they're for federal intervention when they're going to lose. Funny and the thing is my recollection is they declared they didn't want federal intervention back in 2000 in what was clearly a federal matter. Liberals asking President Bush to save their bacon. Ahh, the visceral pleasure of schadenfreude at work. Its fun watching the enemy go up right to the man they hate with a passion to get him to cancel democracy.

These are the bozos that ran California into bankruptcy. I'd have President Bush do a Ford and tell California like New York City, to "drop dead!" That would make my day.

The solution is to cut spending and to cut taxes. Somehow it never occurs to these liberals to ask California's liberal political establishment to pass a real world budget by July 1st. Their priority is to blame Republicans. Sheesh and we don't even run California!
