The response to the Davis Recall has become truly overwhelming. Stories are being written all over the state about people standing in lines to sign recall petitions. The Ventura Star News ran one this morning featuring our Ventura County Co-Chair Mike Robinson and it really captured what is going on at the grassroots level:
"Robinson shouted out "Recall Davis?" to the next person leaving the building. The man slowed his walk, but didn't stop. "He tripled your car taxes," Robinson said. "It'll hurt you!" Ian Brown, an Agoura Hills account executive, sighed, stopped and signed."
The fact that the Governor took the illegal action to triple the car tax caused such a surge in the recall signature gathering last week that we have now surpassed the one million signature mark and we are diffidently on track to make our self-imposed deadline of July 4th!
Our Recall Committee met here in Sacramento on Thursday and took some important actions that I want to tell you about, but first I want to make sure that we focus on the important things that we need YOU the grassroots to do in the next two weeks.
Don't let up!
It is critically important that everyone continue to get as many signatures as possible right through the 4th of July weekend. People are ready to sign the recall petitions and we need to give them every possible opportunity to do so!
If we stopped right now, I am sure we would have the 1.1 to 1.2 million signatures that we need to qualify the recall election by having at least 897,158 of these be valid signatures. However, we know that the Governor's supporters will stop at nothing to block us and we expect all sorts of challenges to the petitions. If we get well over the 1.2 million mark this becomes almost impossible for them to do and so your efforts over the next two weeks will provide the "insurance" signatures that we need!
Return the Signatures that you have!
It is time to get those signatures that are in your car, on the desk, in your purse, or wherever else they are, gathered up and sent back to our office so they can be processed and shipped to the counties. Please send in whatever you collect over the next two week at least twice a week if you can.
Please contribute to our cause!
The small contributions that many have sent in have been the lifeblood of our operation here in Sacramento. By Monday we will have shipped almost 800,000 signatures to the various county offices. We must ship AT LEAST another 400,000 over the next three weeks and this is putting a real strain on our staff and the budget. Your generous on-line contribution could make all the difference at this critical time..
If you prefer to contribute by check, simply make it out to Davis Recall Committee and return it with your petitions. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Davis Recall Committee Meeting
As I mentioned above, the members of the Davis Recall Committee who gathered on February 4th to sign the petition notice that began the recall meet in convention at our Sacramento office this last Thursday.
It was an exciting morning with a live broadcast on KTKZ with our good friend Eric Hogue. Eric was joined by phone by our San Diego hero Roger Hedgecock and a host of State officials who stopped by. The Recall Gray Davis committee brought by another 25,000 signatures and the high point of the broadcast was watching the Rescue California committee staff driving up with a Hummer filled with almost 200,000 petitions. Those two deliveries confirmed that we had in fact crossed the one million signature mark this week!
Critical Resolutions Passed
At nine o'clock the committee members met for almost two hours hearing important updates from yours truly, our Internet & Talk Radio specialist John Stoos and former CRP Chairman Shawn Steel. The committee passed two important resolutions that we have posted on the website.
Despite the additional cost factor, the committee voted unanimously for a resolution asking Secretary of State Kevin Shelley and Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamande to fulfill their Constitutional duties and call the recall election as quickly as possible.
The second resolution confirmed that our committee will be focused on the "YES on Recall" portion of the ballot and will not endorse any candidate to replace Governor Davis. However, the resolution goes on to express their outrage over the illegal action to triple the car tax and instructed the committee to oppose ANY candidate that did not pledge to immediately reverse this action if they are elected Governor on the recall ballot to replace Governor Davis.
We are making history!
For the first time in almost one hundred years the people of California are about to use the power of the recall to remove a statewide official. As I told the gathered members of the committee, "On February 4th one man's action became one hundred. Now the one hundred has become one million and in just a few short weeks the recall will be the property of the thirty-five million California citizens."
This has all been made possible by the hard work done by all of YOU up and down our fine state! Please continue to push for as many signatures as you can in the next two weeks! And please ENJOY the 4th of July weekend this year knowing that we have launched a new "Independence Day" for California!

Bill Sammon indicated that there were people lined up to sign when he was at Stanford this week.
Thanks for the info. I may have mis-heard which city it was.
I haven't spent any time in southern CA since the early 70's. I was home ported in San Diego at the time so, even though I was in the area, I was pretty isolated from the political scene.
It's hard to imagine that there could possibly be any competition from the left to the Bezerkley and Santa Cruz socialists that we have up here.
