A Republican will not succeed Davis. It will be a Dim, most likely Cruz Bustamente, either by a recall vote or by resignation (i.e., Davis resigns and Bustamente, as Lt. Governor, succeeds him).

Where do you get your information?

Davis cannot just resign and pass on his office to the Lt. Governor. It doesn't work that way here.

If he resigns, fine, The recall election is still on. It's the office that is being recalled, so an election is still held to decide whether the electorate wants to recall, and then they are given a choice of candidates.

Stick a fork in Davis. He's done!

Fox News said it's a distinct possibility last night. As for who succeeds Davis (and SOMEONE will, because the guy is definitely toast) I am torn on that: On the one hand, I'd be thrilled to see a conservative Republican get in (won't happen), and would even welcome a moderate Republican; however, that could be a double-edged sword, because if that person can't turn California around to any noticeable axtent, he or she will be blamed just as much as Davis is. As you know, the electorate is fickle as hell, and has the knack of remembering bad things and forgetting good things. On the other hand, if another Dim succeeds Davis, the only good thing for the state would be if he or she falls on his or her ass, doesn't fix anything, and the state implodes and in 2006 there would be a complete housecleaning, in which case the Republicans may be able to get back into office.

I don't know, it's a tough call. I'll take my chances with the Republican, because he or she can't screw things up any more than what they are now. But there is no doubt that Davis is through.
