NEW SARS CASE IN CHINA

NEW SARS CASE IN CHINA

China has reported a new case of SARS just a day after the World Health Organisation declared the country free of the virus.

Health officials said the country remained on high alert for the flu-like virus after the new case in the southern Guangdong province.

The new case had been previously suspected and was later confirmed as being Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

One death from a previously confirmed case was also recorded in Beijing, the health ministry said.

WHO spokesman Bob Dietz said it did not affect the UN health agency's decision to declare China SARS-free.

"We are concerned but our concern would be greater if this was a new emerging case and not a case that has developed from an already identified suspected case," he said.

Vice Premier Wu Yi promised China "will spare no effort to prevent the return of SARS."

Beijing's government and businesses celebrated China's new Sars-free status, billing it as a victory for the nation.

They also kick-started a campaign to lure back visitors and investment.

Beijing is the city hardest hit by SARS that first surfaced in Guangdong in November and spread around the world.

The WHO is completely ignoring the potential comeback of sars which could be a replay of the 1918 flu epidemic.

"Local firm's SARS test validated"

"Hrusovky said the finding that the SARS virus has been around for millions of years also is important in that it eliminates the possiblity that the virus was engineered as a bioterrorism weapon."

The company also says it is close to identifying the primary source of SARS: The Master Catalog has provided substantial evidence that the SARS virus has been with us since the time other corona viruses diverged from the parent species, at least 10 million years ago.

Why couldn't SARS be a bioengineered variant of a coronavirus that has been around for at least 10 million years?
