SF Gate's lead columnist, Mark Morford, has won first place in the online columnists division of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists contest.
In addition, Chronicle television columnist Tim Goodman won the society's Herb Caen Memorial Award for notes/item columns.

- 1995 - William Raspberry
- 1994 - Molly Ivans

I don't see any conservatives on that list (even though the numbers of conservative columnists dwarf the number of liberal ones). I don't know some of the lesser lights, though.
To their credit, columnist of the year is Michael Kelly, presumably because he's dead.
I do see by their website that Tony Norman is their treasurer. His role on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is roughly that of Cynthia Tucker's in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to the contest this guy won, though, you have to pay $20 to vote.
