Global warming may have attracted the rare South American species, the Black Widow, into deep water fisheries off the south west.

More likely hitched a ride on the Gulf Stream express.

Giger was the "alien designer" for Alien. Given the organic quality of his work, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this fish inspired him.

I would be inclined to accept that argument were it not for the fact that Giger's first drawing of the "Alien"-type creature far predated even the pre-production for the Alien film.

Besides, the fish hardly even comes close to remotely resembling Giger's creature.

You and me both, man... you and me both. This fish has the same personality of an ex-fiance' I had. Luckily I disentangled myself before I shrunk to 1/100th of normal size.

I was thinking ex-High School girlfriend... you apparently got closer to 'shrinkage' than I. :)

I was thinking it could be one of Clinton's illegitimates. Did he fill the spider fish quota in his diversity program in the White House? A spider fish intern perhaps?

"Global warming may have attracted the rare South American species, the Black Widow, into deep water fisheries off the south west."

Wasn't the Gulf Stream cooling down last year? I heard global warming was causing an ice age, cooling down the gulf stream, and causing glaciers, and it was the fault of the evil nazi-bush US. I just can't keep up with our routine climate crisis updates. My head's feeling dizzy. Does Hellery! have two heads? Get me a cross, quick!

Maybe Gore took a canoe ride there and 'lynx hair' the coast to 'prove' that we must 'save our fragile planet'. A little enviro-wacko 'iced tea' moment, perhaps? Like the lynx hair incident. But I'm feeling mu...uch better, now. =]

The bulbous black fish traps males for mating and they stay attached for the rest of their lives.

Good L-rd. It seems females of every species all have the same goals.
