Editorial Second Thoughts
By: William W. Lawrence 06/24/2003
Walker Lundy wrote his retirement column, Sunday, expressing disappointment in the corruption he found in Philadelphia.
So, Mr. Lundy, what has the Inquirer been doing about it? You ran the place for 18 months.
You express shock that Philadelphia school officials can't figure out absentee rates yet you never crusaded to start a voucher program in the city. Why? Because your newspaper has been an arm of the deep-pocketed, left-wing teachers' union for decades. It still is. The Inquirer is simply part and parcel of the Democratic Party.
For the same reason, you never campaigned to give the school board the power to replace striking teachers and hire administrators who are not part of the educational establishment.
You express awe at how the Convention Center actually chases business from the city. Where were the editorials demanding a right-to-work law? Sorry. Forgot. Unions are a Democrat constituency.
And there were a few things you neglected to mention. A major hospital closed in this county citing increases in medical liability insurance as the reason. Another one will soon be closing its neonatal intensive-care unit.
Sure, the Inquirer reports these things, but when the doctors complain you make sure to quote the trial lawyers about how the insurance companies -- which try really hard not to do business in this state, by the way -- are to blame. Trial lawyers. More Dems.

I'll say this, when the cops screw up you make it a point to play it up. That's not a criticism. Police departments actually work rather well as government institutions go, because it is one of the few actually scrutinized by the big media.
The Republican Party is also a much better organization, thanks to the scrutiny of the Inquirer and the rest of the old, established dailies.
You and your cohorts trained the spotlight on the bad apples and forced the GOP to get rid of them. America would be much better off if only you would do the Democrats the same favor.
Go out and smell the roses, Mr. Lundy. I only hope Amanda Bennett, who just entered through the Inquirer's revolving door, does a better
job than you did. ***

However, there are many of us who hate and despise the Inquirer. It is a dishonest publication and a disgrace to fair-minded journalists.
(We dropped our Inquie subscription some time ago; we couldn't stomach it either.)
No.
