My county clerk just advised us that she has been notified by the CA Secretary of State's Office that the recall effort against Gov. Gray Davis, has qualified for the ballot. After signatures are verified statewide, the Secretary of State's Office will call an election, with possible election dates of November 2003 or March 2004 being considered.

Really?! I thought that Costa said only 600k+ have been submitted to the counties. There's no question that there will be sufficient signatures turned in soon, but how could the ballot have qualified already?

the weasels in charge of counting them decided to invalidate a bunch on some technicality related to how the verbage was arranged on the paper.

Sec. of State Shelley was pretty careful about the wording; he even delayed the petition 10 days just for having three instead of four dots of elipsis, although I'm not sure either usage on the petition was grammatically correct.

I thought he might have been interested in running, so that he would make sure the petition was perfect while pretending to side with Davis until the petition qualifies for the ballot.

In L.A county here - I signed a petition earlier this evening to recall Gray Davis. This bandwagon is definitely on a roll and no one's gonna stop it til he's gone.

Holy Cats!

Are we sure, we don't have enough signatures as yet according to what had been stated here that we needed !!

Was that figure set too high deliberately?

Where did we get that number?

So why isn't our crack media throughout California informing the voters of the state what the county clerks and our Secretary of State know?

My county clerk just advised us that she has been notified by the CA Secretary of State's Office that the recall effort against Gov. Gray Davis, has qualified for the ballot.

They shouldn't waste the time- let the counties deal with sorting that B.S. out.

They (Costa and the other recall people) just building future political direct mail lists to hit people up for money every couple of weeks.

Hello crap like clockwork every two years...

Wonderful news! I'm a 3rd generation native of CA who hasn't lived there since 1972. The devolution of my home state makes me sick every time I go back for a reunion, wedding, or funeral.

I was stuck in CA for a week during the recount of 2000, and I've never been in so much anguish. I started the week at a reunion at Berkeley -- it was so tense. All I wanted to do was find out the latest news from Florida, but I coudn't discuss it with anyone. My host was a radical Sierra Clubber/SF Attorney. I remember a party full of Old Blues (with a Standfor alum thrown in for good measure). There were a couple of Bush backers there and we exchanged the latest news in whispers in the hall way. The others were all obnozxious Gore backers -- really they were more Bush bashers than backers of anything.

Then we had to join relatives for Thanksgiving. That was even worse. We had a couple of school teachers there. OMG, the table conversation was strained. I finally told my mother and sister-in-law that my husband had suffered a heart attack (a white lie) and was on doctor's orders to never discuss politics. They still wouldn't stop!

I'd like to see Grey Davis and all the Dimwits go to He!! in a leaky boat.

This bandwagon is definitely on a roll and no one's gonna stop it til he's gone.

I remember when they said that Prop 13 wouldn't qualify and then wouldn't pass and then wouldn't survive court challenges. Howard Jarvis (may he RIP) has singlehandedly been responsible for much of of the wealth and easy living you all have enjoyed over the years (high property valules and low taxes) IMHO. I sold my house 1 year too soon to cash in.

I posted this in another thread, but I keep seeing people worried about the total signatures reported by the Secretary of State. So here we go :) ...

====

A couple points fellow FReepers.

First - over 900,000 signatures have been collected. They have not ALL been turned in. This is because every petition must be processed and scrutinized. We at the RecallGrayDavis.com - Howard Kaloogian's Recall Effort send back problem petitions for corrections to ensure that the ones we turn in stand up to every possible legal challenge by Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. The Contra Costa Times reports (and it's been published here at FR) that when the Contra Costa Registrar did an analysis of petitions submitted to them 90.62% of the signatures were valid - a number they described as "stunning" and like nothing they had ever seen before in history. This high of a validity rate will definitely not hold up statewide with all of the petitions, but it shows you the care and dedication we approach our work with.

Second - the "paid" petitioner signatures all have to be validated through an excrutiating process. The reason? You don't pay for invalid signatures. So before petitions circulated by these folks are turned in they have to be thoroughly vetted.

What's important now is for us to build AS BIG of a buffer/cushion as we can before July 4th so that we can withstand any Democrat attempts to invalidate signatures. So please, DO NOT STOP COLLECTING SIGNATURES! Let's get to 1.5 million or more signatures by July 4th so that we can ensure a FALL special election.

DOWNLOAD ANOTHER PETITION - CLICK HERE - when the July 23rd announcement of collected signatures is made (the next legal reporting period) then the world (including the b@st@rds in the press corps) will see that Californians have spoken in historic terms about whether this recall will qualify for the ballot.

It will. And many many FReepers have played an integral role in making this happen! Thanks for joining together for a great populist and historic effort.
