Well, I don't know if "crushed" is quite the proper term. The tenets of Islam demand that its followers submit to the word of God, as passed on through His prophet. My limited understanding of their belief is that they'll go to heaven if they can abide by the rules laid out in the Koran. I think that truly devout Islamic people consciously submit to such rules -- they aren't necessarily "crushed" into it.
Of course, there are also the standard-issue Tyrant Mullahs, who do try to crush people, and many times they succeed. And obviously they can and do take advantage of the structure of Islam to lead their followers astray.
There's an awful lot about Islamic society that seems completely twisted -- treatment of women, for example -- that I think probably can be traced back to Mohammed himself. The women thing looks suspiciously like the sort of outlook that might be held by a man who "waits" until his wife turns 9.
Also, there's a certain tribal quality to the whole thing that does not translate well into large-scale society.
I do think Islam is probably a false religion. Which is not the same as saying that all who practice it are going to hell. (For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." (Rom. 4:3))
