I'm a 'tweener. My wife's 40th birthday is this Sunday (she's a little upset about it, even though she's still quite beautiful and is often mistaken for 30).

The war has been a-brewin' for quite some time. John Fonte wrote an excellent piece called Why There is a Culture War that really got the left's knickers in a knot.

John uses Gramsci and Tocqueville to illustrate both sides of this war. According to John, Gramsci believed that in order for Marxism to succeed it was necessary first to delegitimize the dominant belief systems of the predominant groups and to create a 'counter-hegemony' (i.e., a new system of values for the subordinate groups).

That's what's been happening for some time now, as the left has invaded and taken over the government and our institutions.

John and I exchanged several emails before I came to the conclusion that since it took a long time to turn the ship that is this country, it was probably too late for anyone to make any significant attempt to turn it the other way.

Sorry, but GW Bush is part of the problem, not the solution. My Dad has lately been saying that he's happy he's 66. I've been saying lately that I'm happy to be (almost) 40.

My wife keeps saying that every generation says that civilization is sliding down the crapper. I told her the reason for that is that it WAS sliding down the crapper all of that time.

Biblical types (me included) would have to say that it is so written, so it was bound to happen anyway. We have no children, but I have nieces and nephews and friend's kids I treat as my own, and I worry about them.

We're fortunate enough to have been successful capitalists, so I can at least leave them all a pile of cash when we shake off this mortal coil.

Sorry that you have to clean up our mess.

I'm 30, right in the middle of Generation X and saving up for my escape...hopefully to a small island in the Caribbean, Cayman Islands or St Maarten, maybe.

You're at the top end of Generation X (isn't Gen X 1963-1977 births?), I think.
