DCF Worker Charged With Stealing Welfare Money
POSTED: 2:02 p.m. EDT June 21, 2003 UPDATED: 11:49 p.m. EDT June 21, 2003
MIAMI -- A state caseworker has been charged with creating two fake welfare accounts and approving $8,791 in benefits to himself because of financial problems, prosecutors said.
Edwin Johnson was taken into custody Friday on four felony counts carrying a possible 15-year prison term.
Johnson created new files in the state Department of Children & Families computer and listed the names of his ex-wife and a friend and made up others as recipients. The work generated benefit cards that were mailed to his home, and he redeemed $5,775 in benefits before the accounts were frozen this month.
Investigators tracked work on the accounts to Johnson's password and computer terminals used by him at four offices since last August. Investigators say Johnson admitted that he had falsified computer and paper records.
DCF officials did not return a page Saturday.
Lol, you beat me to it!
He probably felt entitled to this free money, no different than the others who collect it legally because they are having financial problems.
