He'd be a tough opponent, but he'd still probably lose, and we'd get his seat, which he holds by sheer force of personality. He almost lost it in '94, but we fell short.

As to Congressman Clyburn's remark about a Black person not being able to win statewide, I'd like to amend that to say that a 'Rat nominee reflecting a Socialist/victim mentality where they "see" racism under every rock that halts their initiatives rather than recognizing that it is their own proposals that are clearly out of step with SC, are the ones who won't get elected. Nominate a Conservative African-American Republican, and I believe they can win a statewide office. The SC GOP ought to be looking for such a person. As I commented once before, this state remains one of the most racially/politically polarized in the nation, and we need to start working on doing something about it. We may have a majority now, but once the 'Rats smarten up and nominate more palatable moderate candidates (who would automatically get the entirety of the Black vote and also be acceptable to a lot of Conservative Whites, not something all that difficult to do), we could easily find ourselves in trouble.

That's a good idea in theory for the democrats to execute, but you forget who will ultimately have the most clout in their party. While the democrats in SC are currently controlled by lawyers, blacks can all ways threaten to boycott the election if there is not a candidate to their liking. Also, I'm all for your minority outreach idea.

Spratt is the classic example of how much re-election power incumbents hold. Here is a guy who works to stop tax cuts at the Federal level and we keep sending him back to Washington. He is very clever though in how he votes and stays in the background almost always...
