Actually it's old movie lore, from a line spoken by Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects, which is one of the few movies on my I-can-watch-this-movie-anytime-again-and-again list. Spacey's work in the movie was incredible, and the movie stands up well to repeat viewing.
If you like good cinema, I strongly recommend The Usual Suspects.
