HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Attorneys for Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel have been granted more time to file a legal brief appealing his murder conviction before the state Supreme Court.
Skakel, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy, was convicted one year ago of beating Martha Moxley to death with a golf club in 1975 when they were 15-year-old neighbors in wealthy Greenwich.
Skakel, 42, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
His attorneys were granted extension Thursday until Aug. 4 to file a legal brief detailing their arguments for challenging the conviction. The deadline had been June 27.
Defense attorneys said it was the first request for an extension and that prosecutors did not object. In seeking more time, they cited the large volume of transcripts involved in the case and numerous other cases they are working on.
After the defense files its arguments, prosecutors will get a chance to respond before the state Supreme Court schedules oral arguments on the appeal.
Skakel's attorneys have cited numerous issues they plan to raise on appeal, including a statute of limitations and the transfer of the case from juvenile to adult court.
Prosecutors say they are confident the verdict will stand up on appeal.
You can bet on that.....Teddy is probably pulling strings like a puppetmaster as we speak!!!! ;^)
