FBI chief says economic espionage costs U.S. $200 billion annually

Foreign spying on U.S. companies costs Americans about $200 billion a year, as economic espionage has increased since the Cold War ended, FBI Director Robert Mueller said Friday.

University students, business executives and company insiders have been trying to steal technology, trade secrets and manufacturing processes, Mueller said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington.
