The above quote is a massive 'lie'.

The President of Iran is vetted by an extremely hard-line group of 12 called the Guardian Council. Therefore, only the most loyal to the Islamists in power can run for presidency.

Mullah Khatami won only because 234 out of the 238 candidates were disqualified.

Otherwise, some of the other parts of the column are correct.
