NEW DELHI: Indian Army which recently started inducting the advanced T-90 tanks is facing problems with its night fighting capabilities and the issue has been taken up by the Chief of the Army Staff General N C Vij with Russian army top brass in his ongoing visit to the country.
India, which had signed a deal for acquisition of 310 T-90 tanks, has already equipped two armoured regiments with these main battle tanks. The tanks delivery schedule was advanced on New Delhi's request during Operation Parakaram, Army sources said.
The Russian military brass has assured Vij during talks that it would send a high level delegation to India to look into and rectify the faults. The tanks are also armed with missiles which are capable of engaging enemy tanks beyond visual range.
Vij, during his talks, also asked the Russian army brass to speed up the delivery schedule of Smerch long range multi-barrel rocket system capable of hitting enemy targets almost 50 to 60 km away.
The Army chief on his first foreign visit after his take over, on Friday witnessed a fire power display in which Russian army T-90, T-72 tanks, BMP 3 and BMP 2 armoured carriers and Russian self propelled 155MM artillery guns took part.
Gen Vij also gave a presentation on India's security concerns at Russia prestigious General Staff Academy.
But not at night, apparently.
