The difference is, Churchill did what was necessary and led his people to victory; McCarthy attacked convenient targets and made a big show of himself. Some of those convenient targets were real communists, and needed to be removed from gov't positions--but many weren't.

The "pathetic drunk" epithet was also hurled at times against the late Senators Russell B. Long, D-LA, and John G. Tower, R-TX.
