Actually Joe got his traction after Mao put away China. Folks panicked a bit, and Joe was there to exploit it. What exactly was Kissinger doing around 1950? I really want to know.

Mao didn't "get" China. Democrats gave it to him. Harry Dexter White, Lauchin Currie, Alger Hiss and a few other good liberals who happened to be working for the Soviets handed China to Mao. Currie even wanted us to give communists all of Korea and Japan (Harry Dexter White was most interested, however, in giving Stalin a clear path to the English channel. He helped write, on Stalin's orders, the Morgenthau plan).
"Smearing good people like Alger Hiss and Lauchlin Currie [both Soviet espionage agents] is, I think, unforgivable...Anyone knowing either Mr. Currie or Mr. Hiss, who are two people whom I happen to know fairly well, would not need any denial on their part to know they are not Communists. Their records prove it."--Eleanor Roosevelt
