It is very possible that Ethel was innocent. But Julius, David and Ruth were not.

Ethel might have just been following her husband in not telling anything. In truth, she might not have known anything, but in her twisted mind, America was a "fascist state", and so, she didn't fight for her innocence nor go against her husband whom could have saved her had he testified it seems.

It seems to me that Julius could have saved her by testifying what he knew and who he knew and she would have gone along.
