[history]
University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Billy Gaines was in critical condition last night at Mercy Hospital after a bizarre 25-foot fall in a church.
Gaines, a 19-year-old sophomore, received a fractured skull and spinal injuries after he tumbled from a catwalk near the ceiling of St. Anne Church in Homestead to the rock-hard pews below.

Prayers for this young man. From what I understand, he's not doing well at all.

And now KDKA is reporting that he has passed away. God be with him and his family.

Why do people take such risks with no training, and when its not involved on the job? What a waste! So sad.

Similar incidents get a "hold muh beer alert" ping. Why not this one?

Agreed.
I am sorry to hear of this tragedy and will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers, as well as the souls of those who have made such callous and heartless statements in this thread.

Just curious once more, why we don't see similar sympathy for every person who pulls a jackass-like stunt? (I bet the people who use the catwalks have a safety harness rigged to suspend them from the catwalk if they fall.)

To: Willie Green
Perhaps it hasn't soaked through your skull that to go out on one of these walks w/o safety harness IS such a stunt?

The two crawled along in the dark -- Abdul estimated 30 yards with no flashlights, no source of illumination -- until they decided to head back. "We were out there pretty far and we decided we should turn around," Abdul said. "He just slipped and fell."
Abdul said he heard the noise of Gaines breaking through the ceiling. He said he assumed that Gaines miscalculated his position on the boards and put his weight where there was no support.
"I think he was too far over on the left," Abdul said.
As I said, hold my beer but you can't watch this, there's no light in here to see!
