Pre-Y2K, I picked up a few boxes of M2 ball, but haven't been able to get to a gun show to find anything more exotic. I sure won't be putting it on a credit card, if you catch my drift. Reckon an old bolt rifle will have to do, but you can see trouble coming from a long ways off in these parts.
Nothing wrong with an old boltgun at all, though it's helpful to have a handgun along should things happen at distances closer than ideal for use of the bolt rifle on your terms. And a shotgun to go along with it, or as a spare for a companion who can do their part by standing watch while you rest will help keep you sharp enough to use it effectively. Alternately, it can be useful for you to have a pal or two with lesser [or even better, equal!] equipment for fun surprises for those who mistakenly assume they're operating against a lone individual with that semi-obsolete rifle.
Too don't overlook the happy thought of opening the ball with a few spaced shots from a lesser weapon, seemingly a .22 bolt action, perhaps, then raising the ante on those who attempt to maneuver to deal with that seemingly limited problem.
