I guess you really do want an explanation. The simple answer is incremental disarmament and control. This is coming from two sides.

When Hand Gun Control, Inc. found its message was not well received they even changed their name. Now we have the Violence Policy Center, the Million Mom March and the Brady Center as well as several others. Even though their membership numbers are far below the NRA, GOA and other RKBA organization, they are about as well financed.

Instead of trying to ban all handguns or all firearms as is their stated goal, they are taking the baby steps. Ban further manufacture of machine guns in 1986 driving the price up ten fold with an eleventh hour revision to what was supposed to be an act to protect gun owners. The 1994 ban on so called assault rifles (because they look dangerous) knowing that the general public will confuse them with real machine guns. Then the Brady act which was in its original form gun registration. Remember you have to know who has the guns before you can confiscate them. They are still floating the “ballistic fingerprinting” knowing that it is voodoo science and will not work, but also knowing that to even attempt it all guns would have to be tracked [registered].

The BATFE has used its “regulating power” to redefine “sporting” in 1989 to ban many previously legal import. It also reclassified several shotguns already widely distributed as “destructive devises” under the 1934 NFA act requiring them to have a tax permit after the fact; with NO GROUNDS TO DO SO. They have redefined what is and is not pistol ammunition. I have been told by several gun dealers the BATFE agents informed them that they were in business only because they [the BATFE] allowed them to keep their license. “If we can’t find a regulation you have broken we can always change the regulations.”

While that is going on from the regulation end, the BATFE keeps getting more and more aggressive in the “enforcement”. What started out as accountants and tax collectors is now a would-be paramilitary group with almost no oversight and certainly no accountability to the public. Others have mentioned Waco, Ruby Ridge and other miscarriages of justice. What most people do not hear is that all gun dealer and manufacturers in the USA are very aware that they can be shut down at any time by the BATFE with little or no recourse.

Those in the federal government that don’t have a problem with BATFE methods of enforcing compliance have had a difficult time getting the real military to go along with their ideas. The National Guard Troopers pulled back from the action when they realized what was taking place at Waco. The BATFE and other federal “law enforcement” are becoming the “standing army” the founding fathers warned you about.

We are one deep economic recession away from the Democrats regaining the White house and both houses of Congress. There is not one of the nine Democrats vying for the Presidency or any on the sidelines that would not put their weight behind the Brady Center’s agenda. Combine that with a Democrat controlled Congress and the current actions of the BATFE and you have a nightmare.
