On Tuesday, a caller named Irene rang me up to say that women choosing not to work are screwed out of 401(k) plans and Social Security if their husbands die. Irene lives in Rose City, Michigan, but I told her not to worry, because under this new Medicare bill she's going to be living in Fat City soon enough! You do get some of your spouse's Social Security if they pass away. They also specify you as recipients of retirement accounts, life insurance, etc.

Besides, Irene said she chose to stay at home because she decided she could afford it. Now she says she can't but doesn't regret the decision - provided she can take your money to give her some security. My point is that radical feminists sought to deny women this choice all together by stigmatizing motherhood itself. Yet the latest Census data shows that kids who were left in the control of government-run daycare refuse to put their kids through that. I don't want to portray anything as a panacea - nothing is. Being a stay-at-home mom isn't the greatest thing that can happen to anybody, but it's not the worst. The point is, the choice should be the woman's and we should respect it.

As for choosing whether to stay at home based on money, you won't have to worry about retirement after the 2004 election! No, the biggest government spending plan in 40 years will fix it because the Baby Boomers are retiring and it's still Me, Me, Me with them. Of course, this money doesn't come from a magic pile of money. It comes from young people. When I get this freebee, I'm going to get all the drugs I can and wave them at kids in their 20s. I'm going to tell them how they're buying medicine for Bill Gates because old people vote and young people are too busy watching MTV to care. Yes, the next exit on the tour bus for you retirees is Fat City. It's right around the corner!

Following Teresa's call, I spoke to Jen in New Jersey - one of the young people who'll be buying the over-65 crowd their paradise in Fat City. I had to turn on the Dittocam for you Rush 24/7 subscribers to see me take this call. Jen needed to be on Social Security because she had a medical condition, so we put her on it even though she's only 32. This helps her pay her $900-a-month drug bill, as a state program had previously. A car accident changed Jen's life, and she was grateful that Social Security was there to help her. Note: she didn't feel "entitled" to what anyone else earns. She said "thank you" to the American taxpayer. What a unique and mature attitude. Good luck to you, Jen!

Finally, I ask you to consider two stories linked and dissected in the audio below. First is from the Christian Science Monitor: "Culture of Consumption." The second, "Bribe for Greedy Geezers," is in the Rocky Mountain News. It's written by University of Colorado law professor Paul Campos. He asks why the Greatest Generation defeating Nazis gives them a right to force young people to buy their drugs, and then asks whether the Baby Boomers will just give up free drugs under the battle cry, "We were at Woodstock!" The point is that these entitlements never go away. They just grow and grow. Our politicians are buying votes from seniors with free drugs - and making them dependent on the state in the process.

What politicians are better at then bribing us with our own money is playing one group off against another. Rich/poor, city/rural, old/young, men/women, whatever. Divide and conquer. Keep us so busy fighting amonst other groups, that we never notice the real cause is the man behind the green curtain...

The pyramid scheme is teetering, and there is no way that the 'boomers' will be supported without a radical crackdown on individual rights, as well as the obvious erosion of post tax earnings.

Maybe what they should do is to force the drug companies to charge reasonable prices for the prescriptions like they do outside of the US. Then the problem wouldn't be such a problem.

Rush is wrong. The plan is not free.

Under the Senate bill, fully effective in 2006, seniors would pay a $35 monthly premium and a $275 deductible but then would have half their drug costs covered up to $4450 a year. Then they would have no coverage until they had spent about $5800 of their own money. Low income people would get additional subsidies.
This is what Nancy Pelosi thinks of the Bush proposal-which is different than the Senate version. Notice how the Democrats are upset at the high out of pocket cost for seniors.:

" “President Bush has proposed a different course. The meager benefit he is proposing, even with its coverage gaps and high out-of-pocket costs, won’t be available to the 89 percent of Medicare beneficiaries who are enrolled in the existing fee-for-service program."

From the Chicago Tribune:
" Some analysts say many Medicare recipients may consider it too skimpy and decide not to enroll, holding politicians accountable for providing a meager benefit that will not take effect until 2006. The legislation has a long way to go, and it could change significantly before it lands on President Bush's desk. But the version approved by the Senate Finance Committee last week, which is most likely to pass Congress, sets a hefty price just for enrolling in the drug plan, and signing up is voluntary."
" A plan sponsored by the House Republican leadership is similar to the Senate proposal. It calls for an average $35 monthly premium, along with a $250 annual deductible. But unlike the Senate plan, the House version would cover 80 percent drug costs up to $2,000.

There also is a "doughnut" in the House bill.

After the first $2,000 in costs under the House bill, seniors would receive no prescription drug coverage until they spend $5,100 on medicine. Then, the House bill calls for paying 100 percent of drug costs.

Higher-income Americans--individuals who earn more than $60,000 and couples who bring in more than $120,000--would have to pay more out of pocket before receiving catastrophic coverage."

Rush said that this new Medicare plum is going to cost 8 to 13 Trillion US$!! That is much more than our present total economy. Who will pay these huge bills? The taxpayers, that's who. Have Bush/Rove gone crazy adopting the RATS/Kennedy plan intact rather than pushing hard for the Pubbie plan that made more sense and cost a lot less? I fail to understand this move. It's the purest kind of RAT socialism yet.
