Martin Indyk: Rabin, Peres, Barak, Bibi were all willing to return Golan
By THE JERUSALEM POST INTERNET STAFF

Former US ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk said Monday that former Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak and Binyamin Netanyahu, who served during President Bill Clinton's presidency, were willing to return the Golan Heights to Syria in exchange for a comprehensive peace agreement.

Indyk was speaking at a Tel-Aviv University symposium as to the failure of the Camp David peace talks. According to Indyk, the greatest challenge for the Israeli leaders was to bring "the Lion of Damascus [Syrian President Hafez Assad]" to the negotiating table.

Syria lost the Golan Heights, the strategic high ground overlooking northern Israel, during the Six Day War.

As much as I'd like peace over there, I think big mistakes are being made.
