According to the article, Beers tears up when he watches "The West Wing." That’s all I need to know. Living here in D.C., I would estimate that somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of the civilian federal bureaucracy is hard-core liberal democrat just like this gentleman, regardless of whether the republicans or democrats are in power at the top levels.
Although I strongly disagree with his opinions regarding the War on Terror, I actually respect the fact that he chose to quit rather than work to undermine the administration's policy from within, like most of the bureaucrats normally do. I can't fault him for going with his principles here.

He has been heavily involved in the mess that we call a "War on Drugs" in Latin America. Typical civilian government employee - Screw Up, Move Up. DEA agents everywhere are thrilled to see this jackass leave government service.
