In Dawkins' case, not only does he tear down God, but he tears down man -- seeing him as not essentially any different, or more special in any way, than a termite. And yet he seems to have enormous faith in himself, and himself alone. I'm displaying my own personal bias here, but to me such inconsistencies indicate a mind that is, well, less than perfectly balanced, perfectly sound....
Not just Dawkins though. Darwin tears down man also in his 'Descent of Man' by saying we are little more than apes. Hume too tore down man for the sake of tearing down God. It seems to me that materialists are willing to put themselves down in order to be rid of God. We see that on these threads too many times. Aside from other objections I have to materialism, the hopelessness of it seems to me to be a real turn off.
